Susan began her art career making pottery in 1999. Having completed a Biology and Chemistry degree at Warren Wilson College, she took a pottery class at a local studio and has never looked back.

“What fascinates me most about my pursuit of art is the place where science and art meet. I experience my evolution in clay to be what I imagine early pioneers to experience: tramping across the unknown, rebelliously leaving old ideas and having moments of unspeakable beauty, disappointment and surprise.”

“I choose to fire my pots primarily in a wood kiln because the power of intention is magnified with the element of fire, the resulting pot becomes charged with the energy of tree, and because the experience of cramming wood into a kiln while generating extreme temperatures is exhilarating.”

“I love to make pots. I love the way clay feels, smells and tastes and it reminds me of the creeks I played in as a child.”

Susan uses ceramic decals such as the Maidenhair Fern for much of her pottery. She renders the decals by etching on copper, printing the etchings at her favorite printing studio and had the images made into glaze decals.
