Susan Wells created Maidenhair Studio to generate connection between people and earth through the medium of clay. The Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum) is an ancient relative of the ginko tree and has similar leaves. Adiantum pedatum is the fern I fell in love with as a child and grows near creeks in North Carolina.

Susan grew up in North Carolina, has lived in Greece and traveled in Europe and East Africa. She has received an Orange County Arts Commission Grant to build a wood kiln and multiple awards for her work including Sotheby’s Award for Outstanding Work. Early in her career she studied at Penland School of Crafts in western NC, attending and assisting ceramics and copper plate engraving classes.

Susan has been teaching ceramics classes since 2000 at local community ceramics studios and her own studio. Her classes and workshops have evolved from connecting students with the techniques of creating with clay toward her passion of generating pieces that are filled with energies students intend. Her personal work in sculpture has developed by way of her desire to acknowledge the unseen helpers of our planet and support them in their work of healing.
